Currencies, Cash Balances, and Liquidity Analytics
The dedicated «Currencies & Cash» section in Firewire Analytics centralizes cash balance tracking across all brokerage accounts, visualizes FX diversification, calculates the opportunity loss from idle funds (Cash Drag), and tracks non-trading cashflows.

/currencies). - 4 Core Liquidity KPIs: Total Cash Balance, Ruble Liquidity, Foreign Currency Basket (FX), and 30-Day Net Capital Inflow.
- Cash Drag Calculator: interactive tool estimating lost earnings on idle funds based on money market benchmarks (LQDT, SBMM) or key interest rates.
- Dynamics & Charting: cumulative step-line cashflow charts for base currency and real-time exchange rate charts (USD, CNY, EUR) with 1M, 6M, 1Y, and ALL timeframes.

1. Why Active Cash Management Matters
Cash held in brokerage accounts serves two crucial functions. On one hand, having liquidity ready allows investors to capitalize on market dips, settle margin requirements, and cover transaction fees. On the other hand, holding excessive uninvested capital in zero-interest accounts causes significant inflationary erosion, known in portfolio theory as Cash Drag.
In multi-broker investment portfolios, uninvested funds are often fragmented across multiple sub-accounts. The «Currencies & Cash» module (path /currencies) consolidates all cash holdings into a single view, dynamically converts balances using exchange rates, and provides complete visibility over cash drag and allocation.
2. Core Liquidity KPIs
Four key metrics are positioned at the top of the dashboard for quick situational assessment:
- Total Cash Balance: the total sum of all currency holdings converted to base currency (RUB), alongside cash weight within the entire portfolio (e.g.
5.4% of portfolio) and 1D / 7D performance changes. - Ruble Liquidity: pure domestic currency balance and its percentage of total cash (e.g.
92.0% of cash). Displays the prevailing Central Bank key rate badge (e.g.CB 21%) as a baseline benchmark. - FX Currency Basket: total base currency equivalent of all foreign assets (USD, CNY, EUR, HKD), portfolio dollarization ratio, and the count of distinct held currencies.
- Net Cashflow (30D): net difference between external portfolio deposits and withdrawals over the last 30 calendar days.
3. Currency Portfolio & Account Breakdown
The grid features two interconnected analytical tables:
- Currency Portfolio: comprehensive list of all held currencies with brand icons, current exchange rate, total quantity, and base value. Clicking a currency filters the corresponding quote chart and syncs the browser address (e.g.,
/currencies/USDor/currencies/CNY). - Account Breakdown: displays cash balances across individual broker accounts. Each row shows the broker logo, account display name, absolute balance, percentage share, and a fast deposit button.

4. Currency Diversification
The interactive donut chart provides two distinct grouping dimensions:
- By Currency: highlights the composition of your foreign exchange basket (shares of RUB, USD, CNY, EUR), enabling quick risk assessment against devaluation.
- By Broker: visualizes cash concentration across different financial institutions to support counterparty risk management.
5. Cashflow Dynamics and FX Charts
The charting card changes mode automatically based on the selected asset:
- For Base Currency (RUB): plots a cumulative cashflow step line derived from non-trading operations (deposits and withdrawals), showing net capital movements over time.
- For Foreign Currencies (USD, CNY, EUR): renders interactive exchange rate charts with timeframe selectors:
1M(1 month),6M(6 months),1Y(1 year), andALL.
6. Cash Drag Calculator (Opportunity Cost)
In high-interest-rate environments, uninvested rubles resting in brokerage accounts at 0% APR result in substantial opportunity losses. The «Cash Drag Calculator» quantifies the potential return if those idle funds were placed into money market funds (such as LQDT, SBMM), central counterparty REPO, or high-yield savings accounts.
Potential annualized return is calculated using simple interest formulas:
where:
- $C_{\text{rub}}$ is the current total ruble cash balance;
- $r$ is the target annual interest rate (configurable via slider from $10\%$ to $25\%$, defaulting to the Central Bank key rate).
The widget immediately computes both monthly and annual extra earnings. For instance, with a free balance of $1\,000\,000$ ₽ and a $21\%$ interest rate, holding idle cash costs an investor +17,500 ₽ per month ($210,000$ ₽ per year) in foregone returns.

7. Cash Operations Ledger and Manual Entry
The «Cash Operations» widget aggregates all liquidity movements in chronological order:
- Deposits: external inbound bank transfers with date, amount, and recipient account;
- Withdrawals: outbound fund transfers back to bank accounts;
- FX Conversions: exchange transactions between currency pairs (TOD/TOM market orders).
The table provides quick filter pills (All Operations / Deposits / Withdrawals / FX Conversions) and a «+ Deposit / Withdraw» button that launches a dedicated modal dialog for manual balance adjustments or OTC transaction logging.
8. Bento Grid Customization
Like all analytical pages in Firewire, the Currencies module uses a modular Bento Grid layout. Clicking «Configure» in the top header enters customization mode:
- Width & Height Controls: cycle through sizes
↔ 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1/1and↕ Autoto tailor the view for widescreen monitors or laptops; - Drag-and-Drop: move widgets around to prioritize what matters most to your workflow;
- Show/Hide Widgets: hide secondary widgets via the
✕button, and restore them anytime through the «Add Widget» dropdown menu.
9. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are restricted or locked foreign currencies accounted for?
Yes. If your broker reports currency balances on isolated accounts, Firewire includes them in the FX basket converted at official central bank rates. You can also hide specific accounts in the portfolio settings.
How does Cash Drag impact total portfolio XIRR?
Free cash is included in total portfolio valuation $V_t$. When uninvested cash earns 0%, it enlarges the capital denominator without generating returns, dragging down both XIRR and TWR performance.
How do I log a deposit or cash withdrawal manually?
Click the «+ Deposit / Withdraw» button in the page toolbar or operations table header. Choose the destination account, operation type, amount, currency, and transaction date.
